Visit your local cabinet médical and ask to register as a new patient — bring your passport, and proof of address. It can be tricky as many practices are often full, so be prepared to try nearby towns too. Once registered, declare them as your 'médecin traitant' via your Ameli online account to ensure full reimbursement rates. That assumes you have a 'Carte Vital' or health card, which depends on your residency and employment status. Alternatively you can pay per visit (€26)

If you're struggling to find a GP accepting new patients — which is common in rural areas — try the Ameli "find a doctor" tool filtered to your département, or ask your mairie for a list of nearby practices. Some areas have maisons de santé (health centres) that are more likely to have availability. If it is not an emergency and you have a specific requirement you can book online via services like doctolib.fr.
